Health, Food and Technology
Within the Health, Food and Technology Department we focus on health, food, textiles and consumer technology. We aim to develop valuable and transferable skills that will be useful to our learners in the workplace and enable them to make positive lifestyle choices.
During the Broad General Education phase, through practical activities, learners will develop a range of food preparation and cookery techniques and the confidence to use different equipment to make a range of dishes.
Learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of safe and hygienic practices and apply these in practical activities.
They will also develop their understanding of healthy food choices and the link between diet, nutrition and dietary diseases. They will develop the skills and knowledge to acquire lifelong healthy eating practices.
Learners will learn to appreciate the importance of food sustainability, and explore where our food comes from.
Learners will explore the food product development process and be challenged to create and develop their own food product prototype.
Learners will also be introduced to basic sewing skills and textiles and will design and create their own textile piece.
The BGE will prepare our learners for the demands of the National Qualifications should they chose to select Health Food and Technology in 4th year.
In the senior phase pupils are able to study towards a National Qualification in Health, Food and Technology or Practical Cookery.
If successful, pupils can progress through Higher Health, Food and Technology and on to Advanced Higher in Health, Food and Technology.
