In the Broad General Education, learners at Kilwinning Academy will have the opportunity to explore a variety of sports within the department including basketball, fitness, football, outdoor games, badminton, gymnastics, athletics and summer games. Through these activities learners will develop attributes such as cognitive skills, physical competencies, personal qualities and their physical fitness. The aim of our curriculum in the BGE is to prepare learners for the demands of the National Qualifications should they choose to select PE as an option in the Senior Phase. The benefits of adopting a holistic approach to PE in the BGE is that those learners who may not wish to study PE at National level can use the personal qualities developed in the BGE such as responsibility & leadership and communication to further enhance their qualifications by selecting our Sports Leader or Sports Development course.
In the Senior Phase we offer a diverse curriculum aimed at providing a variety of opportunities for learners to achieve as many sport related qualifications as possible. In S4 we offer National 4 and National 5 PE with progression in to the Higher course in S5.
At National 4, learners must complete two assessed activities and an Added Value Unit (AVU) in order to pass the course.
At National 5 learners must complete a 60 mark portfolio followed by 2 x 30 mark performances in order to achieve a final grade.
At Higher, learners will complete a 2.5 hour final exam plus 2 x 30 mark performances to achieve a final grade.
For learners not wishing to study PE at Higher level or looking to add a different sports based qualification to their name we offer diversification in to other courses such as Sports Leader and Sports Development.
