In Kilwinning Academy, our Nurture Base is now in its 6th successful year. Staff in the Zone facilitate small group sessions where the focus is forming positive relationships and developing communication skills whilst working through a health and wellbeing curriculum. All pupils have individual targets and plans, which are shared with all staff in Kilwinning Academy, with the objective being that pupils are supported to transfer skills mastered in the Zone to their other subjects, and eventually to the world of work.
Staff in the Zone
We are currently searching for a new Nurture teacher to lead the department.
Mrs Lynda Lewis has been in Kilwinning Academy since 2001 and began her career as a classroom assistant supporting pupils with a variety of needs. Lynda began to specialise as a Nurture practitioner in 2014 and has been involved in Nurture groups ever since.
Clubs in the Zone
The Zone Breakfast Club
Our Breakfast Club is offered every day (8am – 8.45am) to all the young people in Kilwinning Academy and we are happy to say that this is always well attended with young people coming in every day to enjoy breakfast and have a chat with staff. All school staff are invited to attend the Breakfast Club to enable them to enhance their positive relationships with the young people. This has been very successful so far and it is apparent that both the adults and the young people enjoy starting their day in this very positive and satisfying way.
Chess club is on each Monday lunchtime in the Zone and has grown in popularity since it started in September 2017. We welcome new members each week and hope it continues to benefit those who participate. Chess is an excellent way of sharpening the mind and developing mental capacity. It also helps to spark creativity in the player whilst improving problem solving skills. Our chess club in Kilwinning Academy promotes positive relationships and a sense of belonging.
Pick n mix Wednesday
Every Wednesday lunchtime pupils are invited into the Zone to take part in a variety of activities. For example, board games, colouring and the firm favourite twister.
Film club Friday
Pupils are able to relax and enjoy a film during the Friday sessions in the Zone.
