Art & Design & Technology

The Faculty of Art & Design and Technology aims to provide our young people with a varied and engaging curriculum that develops both core and specific skills. These skills will benefit our young people throughout their time at Kilwinning Academy and in their future.

We currently provide the following subjects at the specified levels:

Subject Description

Art

Pupils will develop skills across a range of creative disciplines. Pupils will work in two distinct areas – expressive folios and design folios. Expressive work will see pupils learn a wide range of painting, drawing, printing and collage techniques. Design work will see pupils work in a variety of 2D and 3D skills – paper construction, material techniques, fabric work, graphic design and Photoshop.

Pupils will also learn the critical aspects of both art and design and complete written work as required by the level they are sitting.

Fashion and Textile Technology

  Pupils will experience a wide range of aspects in the realm of fashion and practical textile work. Opportunities will be given for pupils to learn hands on pattern cutting, sewing and garment making along with theory in fashion, trends and manual processes for the written aspect.

Photography

  Pupils will be given independence and skills to create their own photography shoots over a range of disciplines and subject matters. Opportunities will be available to develop practical skills in camera equipment and detailed use of Photoshop.

Subject Description

Design and Manufacture

  Pupils learn a range of creative design techniques that allow them to come up with practical solutions to real life problems. A wide range of materials and commercial manufacturing processes are covered in the course and pupils have a practical project to complete as well for N4 and N5.

Graphic Communication

  Pupils are given the creative graphic design skills to design professional looking graphics that respond to real –life design briefs. Extensive training is given on 3D modelling on Inventor and in the use of desk top publishing programs to create advertisements and marketing campaigns. Pupils then cover a range of knowledge and skills in the creative and technical graphic topics to complete written assessments at the level appropriate to their ability.

Practical Woodworking

    Pupils complete a range of practical skill builders and models to develop proficiency in metal and / or woodworking manufacturing procedures. Teaching is given across the theory behind the procedures, tooling and machinery used and pupils complete written assessments at the level appropriate to their ability.

Practical Metalworking

Design and Technology

x

      Pupils complete a range of practical projects in design, engineering and craft to develop manual dexterity and creativity in advance of completing N4 courses.

Practical Craft Skills

x

        Pupils complete a range of practical projects that focus solely on accuracy of manufacture and written understanding of material properties and tooling. Used as a skill builder prior to N4 courses.
